The Contemporary Art Exhibition Love Bombing. Gaslighting, produced by the Videoinsight® Foundation, curated by Rebecca Russo, was created for the 29th Edition of Artissima (November 2022), at the Videoinsight® Center, an art space founded in 2010.
It was the result of an Open Call launched in January 2022, to which 112 European Artists responded. It was connected to the assignment of the 11th Edition of the Videoinsight® Prize. It was a Collective Exhibition of Painting, Sculpture, Installation, Neon, Multimedia Art, Video Art, Photography, Drawing, Collage, Digital Art. The 80 Works that were nominated for the Open Call and admitted to the competition for the Videoinsight® Prize 2022, were included in the Art Catalogue of the Exhibition. The 44 Finalist Works were shown to the Public at the Videoinsight® Center in Turin. The Winning Work was acquired by the Videoinsight® Collection, a collection of contemporary artworks that follows the thread of healing through art. The Exhibition was inaugurated on November 4, 2022, and lasted until February 2, 2023. The Opening was held on November 4, 2022 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
The collective exhibition ‘Love Bombing. Gaslighting’ was aimed at raising public awareness on the topic of Pathological Narcissism, the Prevention of Narcissistic Abuse, and the Support of Victims of Pathological Narcissism. Pathological Narcissism, also called Perverse or Malignant, is an ancient, serious and widespread problem, without a solution. It is rooted in human nature, it is deeply connected to History, Religion, Culture, Tradition. It has caused wars, violence, murders, suicides, social damage. It continues to mortify life, making it dangerous, unjust, burdensome.
Erich Fromm defines Malignant Narcissism as ‘the most serious pathology at the root of vicious and inhuman destructiveness’. Pathological Narcissism is characterized by excessive egocentrism, a deficit in the ability to feel empathy towards other people, a spasmodic need to be admired, a tendency towards violence and destructiveness. Victims of toxic relationships with Pathological Narcissists present a traumatic psychophysical condition characterized by psychological impotence, collapse of self-esteem, anxiety, depression, psychosomatic symptoms, emotional dependence.
The Exhibition wanted to focus attention on the problem, awaken consciences, raise questions, suggest rescues. This intent motivated the high quantity of Finalist Works: the more images focused on the theme are looked at, introjected, elaborated, the more thoughts are activated, fundamental insights for change, for care.
